Dermoscopy of moles or dermatoscopy is a simple, non-invasive diagnostic method for identifying numerous changes on the skin.
Dermoscopy of moles – With dermoscopy, it is possible to establish a more reliable diagnosis of pigmentary changes in the skin, and in particular to distinguish melanoma from other benign pigmentary changes. The clinical reliability of diagnosing melanoma with the “naked eye” is estimated at 65%, and dermoscopic examination improves this reliability by 5-30%.
Also, with this method, early detection of other skin tumors is possible, and lately it has been used in the diagnosis of other dermatoses.
It does not replace a clinical examination, but it is a great help in establishing a diagnosis and evaluating pigment changes.
Dermoscopy of moles is very simple to perform. There are different types of dermoscopes, the change is practically magnified and illuminated with that device. The obtained image can be saved in the computer and after a certain time compared with the earlier dermoscopic image. Considering the increasing incidence of skin tumors, it is advised that patients visit their dermatologist at least once a year and have their moles examined by dermoscopic examination.
Performing a dermoscopy requires quality equipment, as well as the training and experience of the person performing the dermoscopy.
